Mrs. Scott's 1st Grade
November 18, 2011
Dear Parents,
Well, as you are reading this we will have finished doing the readings at our first Mass of the year. I can tell by the last 2 days of practice that it will have all gone off without a hitch. You can never tell about how fast they will read. We practiced going really slow and clear, but nerves may kick in at any time and we might just race through it. That is what is nice about 1st grade doing the readings, they are usually the easiest to understand out of all the grades. We had a special treat in celebration today.
Yesterday in Social Studies we made and read a book about the voyage on the Mayflower. It is so much fun to see how interested the kids are about life at that time. They didn’t quite understand at first why it would have gotten stinky below deck after living 3 monthes on a ship. No bathrooms? No regular baths or showers? What did they do? Almost half died that first year? Why? What is seasick? The questions were pretty fast and furious. We are all glad we have what we have. Let us all be grateful!
About the little books coming home; you may keep the book. Please take time that night to start reading it. Some of the kids will be able to just cruise through the book and for others it will be a little tough so you might not get it all done the first night. I would like to know that you started reading it on the night they had it for homework. Please send the slip from the back of the book signed that shows me that you got it home and started it at least. I am trying to get them used to the idea of homework and them being responsible for taking it out to show you, then returning things the next day. They are only getting a reward if it is returned promptly. (Yes, some people have forgotten to take their folders out of their desks to take home. They won’t get their treat unless they took it home on time. ) I remind everyone at the end of the day to take their folder home.
We only have 2 days of school next week so there won’t be a letter coming home. There will be a permission slip, though, for a little field trip that grades k thru 3 will be attending at the Old Log Theater on December 7th. Watch for that please.
Now for the first installment of holiday wishes for the season. I hope you all have a blessed Thanksgiving in which you all have time to enjoy with your families. May God keep you healthy and safe in your travels.
Happy Thanksgiving!
